Afterwards Nadir Shah himself, with the Emperor of Hindustan, entered the fort of Delhi. It is said that he appointed a place on one side in the fort for the residence of Muhammad Shah and his dependents, and on the other side he chose the Diwan-i Khas, or, as some say, the Garden of Hayat Bakhsh, for his own accommodation.

The famous plunder of Delhi that followed the 1739 defeat of the Mughals at the Battle of Karnal by Nader Shah (r. 1736–1747) represents, in retrospect, the last world-conquering design to have risen from the Islamicate world before the 20th century. Nader Shah was born in the fortress of Dastgerd [3] into the Qereqlu clan of the Afshars, a semi-nomadic Qizilbash tribe settled in the northern valleys of Khorasan, a province in the north-east of the Persian Empire. [11] His father, Emam Qoli, was a herdsman who may also have been a camel driver and coatmaker.

There were two men directly responsible for the death of Nader Shah. These were the two men who assassinated him on 20 June 1747. His assassins were Saleh Khan, the head of his household, and Mohammad Qoli Khan Qereqlu, the PITCH Foundation, a voluntary organization formed recently to support the game of cricket, donated TK Two lakh each to ailing former national spinner Mosharraf Hossain Rubel and international umpire Nadir Shah. Both the individuals are currently suffering from cancer and undergoing Nader Shah crushed the Mughal army in less than three hours at the large Battle of Karnal on 13 February 1739. After this decisive victory, Nader captured Mohammad Shah and entered with him into Delhi. When a rumour broke out that Nader had been assassinated, some of the Indians attacked and killed Persian troops.
At its peak, under such figures as Abbas the Great, Safavid Iran had been a powerful empire, but by the early 18th century the state was in serious decline and the reigning shah, Sultan Husayn, was a weak ruler.
